Check out the Comics Curmudgeon for one of the most disturbing commentaries on Easter that you will find in the comics page (not Josh’s comments, the cartoon itself). Sad that even a self-proclaimed non-Christian like the Curmudgeon can see the theological problems with this cartoon. I have a feeling that many of my preacher friends will be using this one as an illustration some time soon!
The sad thing is, poor little Dolly is expressing a thought that many non-Christians, and perhaps many Christians, would agree with. We like the baby Jesus in the manger, but don’t want to come face to face with the Jesus who died on a cross for the sins of the world.
I know, I know: “It’s just a comic.”
[New thought: Chicken Herd Theology (link on blogroll) pointed out a similar thought along these lines on the pulp from a Talladega Nights scene… it’s worth checking out!]
Oh come on you know they went liberal when the mom got that new short hair cut. It was never the same.
Skubalon,
You know, I never thought about the short hair cut connection! Do you remember the Family Circus episode where she was a roadie for the Indigo Girls….?
Thats a joke right? She was never a roadie for them. If thats the case then the ship really went down.
Next thing you’ll tell me that the dad stays home and she works as the ceo of some big company.
Bah! the world has changed.
Hey, it’s just a comic! : )
Actually, “the pulp” (link on my blogroll) has an interesting post about how we tend to see Jesus in a limited way — specifically as “dear baby Jesus.” Head to their blog and search for “dear baby Jesus.” Sorry, I’d provide the link but I’m not as skilled as you, Sprocket. I can’t figure it out from this comment screen. It’d be a nice link for your post though!
thanks for the pingback. the part of this line of thinking i’ve never really understood is why is Christ in the manger more appealling than the one on the cross? it seems to me the one willing to make the ultimate sacrifice for you and me would be more attractive.
My comments were over the top for sarcastic effect. I really didn’t mean it. I said it b/c sometimes we make too much of something simple like that. Sure its not really what Jesus wants us to see. But sometimes people get up in arms about the smallest things. I wonder how many will never read that comic again b/c of a simple observation?
I guess it would be human nature like the baby Jesus more than the one on the cross.
Sprocket, you tell Scubalon were about to go round…I see him talking about women with short hair……
